Solar power technology is not a recent development; in fact, it dates back to the mid-1800s to the industrial revolution when solar energy plants were developed to heat water that created steam to drive machinery. Continue reading below for a brief solar panel history.

In 1839 Alexandre Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect which explains how electricity can be generated from sunlight. He claimed that “shining light on an electrode submerged in a conductive solution would create an electric current.” However, even after much research and development subsequent to the discovery, photovoltaic power continued to be very inefficient and solar cells were used mainly for the purposes of measuring light.

Over 100 years later, in 1941, Russell Ohl invented the solar cell, shortly after the invention of the transistor.

How solar panels work

Light (photons) striking certain compounds, in particular, metals, causes the surface of the material to emit electrons. Light striking other compounds causes the material to accept electrons. It is the combination of these two compounds that can be made use of to cause electrons to flow through a conductor, and thereby create electricity. This phenomenon is called the photo-electric effect. Photovoltaic (or PV) means sunlight converted into a flow of electrons (electricity).

 

Solar power is a rapidly developing energy source in Australia and around the world. The potential for using the sun to directly supply our power needs is huge.

Solar panels can generate electricity without any waste or pollution, or dependence on the Earths natural resources once they are constructed. They have no moving parts so modules are very reliable and have a long lifespan. Solar panels are relatively easy to install and are very low maintenance.

A useful characteristic of solar photovoltaic power generation is that it can be installed on any scale as opposed to conventional forms of power generation that require large scale plant and maintenance.

Solar panels can be installed to generate power where it is needed, which removes the need to transport and distribute electricity over long distances to remote areas.

SOLAR SUBSIDY IN DELHI

It has been a while since we have posted our updates on our blog.

This has a reason though, work more than you talk as our team likes to hustle and be low profile. As we believe actions speak louder than words.

Recently a lot has happened,

We are working tirelessly to enhance the installed grid connected Solar PV capacity in Northern parts of India.

And

With this, we have been closing on 1 MW target.

In the meanwhile, onto residential rooftop portfolio.

No subsidy since our inception

But now!

We are based in Delhi, and have been working for the past 2 years, without any subsidy to our customers from government, as the benchmark costs set for subsidy consider low-quality components and only generic brands can be considered for the set price band, which compromises the system designed for 25yrs, and puts a second thought about the operation and maintenance and warranty claims from these not so popular brands, thus we never considered subsidies as a part of our working portfolio.

Come 2019, our 3rd year of operations.

We still consider you should opt for a solar power plant regardless of the subsidy provision by our government because Government policies should be considered as a helping hand to the needy,

Government subsidy on the solar power plant is considered on the lowest quoted benchmark cost.

Which here in Delhi, for Residential consumers is set at INR 44,100/KWp. For a plant size between 1 to 10 KWp.

And this is the last time our government is providing a Subsidy of 30% of the above-mentioned amount.

this subsidy is for Residential and institutional consumers.

(varies as per Govt. Between INR 12,600 – 13,200 per KWP)

And For once,

We wanted to provide this option to our consumers who are dependent on subsidies to make a choice about their independence from electric bills.

From June 1st, the policies have been changed and the new projects which will be proposed by Government after September would only have a Subsidy of 20%. for up to 10Kwp plants, only for Residential consumers.

Now, We at least once wanted to know how these subsidies and government departments work and cater our Sustainability development services towards customers depending on government subsidies.

Thus, we applied to be a vendor for the government of Delhi NCT.

And agreed to the norms set by DERC and IPGCL.

HERE IS THE ANNOUNCEMENT!

WE ARE NOW EMPANELED UNDER DELHI GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE UP FRONT SUBSIDY TO FIRST 10 CONSUMERS.

We have a limited quantity of 100 KWP for subsidy disbursement.

Only valid for Residential and institutional consumers of 1 to 10 KWp plant size.

Now the best part, this subsidy is valid on both of our premium and economy options.

*Only Indian brands for Solar Panels.

*Only inverters with 40% domestic manufacturing are eligible for the subsidy.

So cross out the micro-inverters.

We reserve the right to consider which 10 customers will be provided this subsidy on first come first serve basis.

Insights to

GBI – GENERATION BASED INCENTIVE

This is a special scheme only available for Delhi.

Referred as Mukhya Mantri solar yojna

In this scheme,

All rooftop solar power plants installed by an empanelled vendor in the year 2019, will be eligible for a monetary incentive by the Delhi government.

This incentive is capped at INR 2/kwh unit generated by the solar power plant,

Can be used for self-consumption or injected into the discom grid.

For each unit generated by your solar power plant, you are going to receive a credit into your bank account every 6 months. I.e twice in a year.

This payment will be effective for the next 5 yrs.

The incentive is capped at 1100 units per KWP installed Capacity per year.

So, if you install a 5 Kwp system,

It should generate 5500 units in a year, Acc. To Delhi government norms,

So 5500 x INR 2 = INR 11,000 EACH YEAR.

( SPLIT IN 2 PAYMENTS, INR 5500 every 6 months credited into your bank account)

INR 11,000 X 5 yrs = INR 55,000 in 5 years.

This is an added incentive we as an Empaneled vendor can provide to our customers opting for net metering in Delhi.

This is the benefit which will be provided to all our customers, regardless of the first cum first serve subsidy internal clause.

This competitive pricing of  ₹4.15/kWh from solar PV plants under net-metering is news of rejoicing to Solar Rooftop Power plant owners/ future owners under CAPEX models to opt for higher installed capacity w.r.t sanctioned loads for net metering.

The state is blessed with high Solar Irradiance daylight hours and the temperatures are moderate for meeting daytime consumer loads solely by Solar power generated at the site of consumer consumption.

Namely due to Huge Setup costs incurred by these undertakings from 

GENCO’s = Generation Companies (owns Power plants/DAMs etc..)

TRANSCO’s = Transmission companies (owns Electricity Lines from Dams to cities) 

DISCOM’s = Distribution Companies ( buys power from Transco to their Sub Stations inside the City, Distributes Power to Consumers using  Grid Setup by them)

Now, Possibilities for Net Metering Systems? 

CASE #1 

If the Generation from your Rooftop Solar Power Plant is more than the Required Load or more than what you can consume, The Excess Energy is Fed Back to Your Utility Supply Company (DISCOM) and the meter runs backward (only if it’s a Bidirectional meter) else you Get Metered using another Meter for Excess Energy Fed back.

The System owner is Credited for the Units that were Fed back into the System.

 

CASE #2 

If the generation of energy from your rooftop solar power plant is less than the required load, the deficit/extra energy is drawn from the main grid/ Utility power supply, and the meter, as usual, runs forward. System owner is charged the units that were consumed. 

 

In both these Cases, The System owner is charged for the difference of units Consumed VS units Fed back into the Grid as per Standard Retail Tariffs.

Note- A utility Company will never ever pay you for the Power you Supply them, you can only settle the Transaction in terms of your billed amount. 

also, in a grid-tie system, you will never be independent for the electricity bills, It can be Downsized to negligible amounts of INR 40/50 Rupees.

well, to explain in simple terms, you have opted for a Grid connection to your property, DISCOMs aka your Grid Supply utility company, took that request and layed down Electricity Lines & poles from their Nearest Sub Station to your house To cater to your Electricity needs, This Cost of New Wire, Poles, Transformer was never charged to you, Your Utility supply company took this heavy investment cost with a pinch of salt assuming you will be a good and loyal customer to their company and will continue to pay for electricity bills, and they will eventually be able to recover the amount they invested for you within a period of 20/30 years.

Also called a roof garden,it is a garden in which vegetables, fruits or flowers are grown on terraces, balconies or roofs of buildings. The kitchen garden, a standard in every Indian household, has now shifted to the roof due to constraints of space, and is called a terrace garden. Increasing pressure on land and escalating costs have also added to its growing popularity.

These gardens can be created on almost all kinds of buildings like residential flats, individual houses, commercial hubs, godowns and factories.

A simple water proofing of the roof is enough. Various water proofing products are available in the market that will ensure that the roof is protected, water-resistant and leakage-free.

Plants with fibrous roots do not cause any harm to the roof but avoid plants with tap roots (like mango) as they may penetrate the roof and harm it by growing its roots in the structure. Sometimes the wind or birds may bring seeds that can germinate and take root on the roof itself. These should be checked for and removed.

You can begin greening your terrace with these simple steps, and then move on to bigger ideas:

  • Take any simple pot or ‘gamla’ or better still recycle any of your old containers.
  • Mix compost, soil, coir peat (or sand) and vermicompost in equal quantities.
  • Cover the drainage hole at the bottom of the container with a broken pot piece or a flat stone, and fill it up with the mixture. You will have to drill a hole in a recycled container first.
  • Pour water and check that no soil is discharged through the bottom hole.
  • Wet the soil and plant your seed or sapling.
  • Watch your greens grow!

You can start with something from your kitchen shelf, that is available and used in everyday cooking like coriander (dhaniya), fenugreek (methi), gram (chana) and chilli (mirchi). Once you gain confidence you can move onto vegetables of your choice and even grow fruit trees like banana and pomegranate. Almost all vegetables can be grown (creepers, drumstick, lime, tomatoes).

You can grow at least 6 vegetables per season. Your 1 sqm of terrace area can give you anywhere between 25 to 50 kg of vegetables in a year.

You don’t need any farming background to start a roof garden. It only takes enthusiasm for green living and and willingness to get your hands dirty.

Some of the benefits to health, aesthetics and environment include:

  • Reduce indoor temperature by 6- 8 degree and can reduce air conditioning cost
  • Reduce overall heat absorption of buildings and insulate the building against heat and cold
  • Convenience of safe, pesticide-free, healthy green and fresh vegetables
  • Conducive to a routine of physical exercise, clean air and being close to nature
  • Increases amount of oxygen in the air
  • Reduce sound pollution
  • Act as a habitat for city-weary birds

Once your garden is established, an hour a day is more than enough to maintain your green area. It is the perfect area to exercise in and improve your fresh air intake.

The sun is source of infinite energy and the energy produced by sun is called Solar Energy. The amount of solar energy reaching the surface of earth is so vast that in one year it is about twice as much as will ever be obtained from all of the Earth’s non-renewable sources of coal, oil, natural gas and mined uranium combined. But most of this free and clean solar energy goes waste in the atmosphere. But with viable technology now available, this energy from sun can be directly converted to electricity by the use of solar Photo-Voltaic (PV) cells. A large no. of cells are arranged together to form a Solar panel. When sunlight falls on these solar panels, it gets converted to electricity and this electricity produced from the sunlight is called Solar Power. The complete system generating the solar energy is called Solar system.


Solar modules convert the sunlight into DC electricity and in specifications which are not suitable for direct use. Additional components are required to convert, condition and monitor the electricity produced so that it may be utilized by common appliances used in homes and offices or may be feed into the grid. This combination of solar panels, inverters, Junction boxes, wires, transformers and other components which finally deliver useful electricity is called a Solar Photo-voltaic (PV) System or a Solar PV Power Plant. The size of a solar power plant can be very small (1 kW or less) which can be easily mounted on home rooftop to thousands of MW (covering huge amount of land).

Grid connected PV systems, as the name suggests, are connected to the electric utility grid. The ground mounted power Grid connected plants have size usually greater than 1 MW and feed electricity into the grid. The roof mounted grid connected plants have sizes from 1 kW onwards but are mostly less than 250 kW and are usually for captive (self) consumption. There is no electricity storage (battery) with these systems and therefore these can provide electricity only in the daytime. One drawback of this system is that it does not provide the electricity when the grid is down and works only when there is supply from the grid. It reduces the load on the grid by as much power as it is generating. It means they are suitable only for areas which have less number of day time blackouts.

Off-grid PV systems provide electricity even during the night as they have dedicated battery banks which get charged during the day and the stored electricity can be used during the night. These systems are not connected to grid and are usually very small in size (less than 50 kW). The large battery banks is the drawback of these systems as they are costly and have to be maintained properly and regularly. These systems are beneficial in Regions with unavailability of Grid f

These systems are connected to the grid but also have a small battery storage or DG set to work with, so that the system can produce power in no-grid conditions. This system brings the best of above two as it is capable of feeding the extra power to the grid as well as provides power when the grid is down within manageable costs.

  • Solar photo-voltaic panels
  • MPPT inverters
  • Solar charge controllers
  • Distribution boxes
  • Mounting Structures
  • Protection & Controls
  • Remote Monitoring System

Solar PV panels convert the sunlight directly into DC electricity. The panels are rated according to their peak wattage. Note that a 200 watt peak solar panel will produce 200 watt power when kept in sun but the power generated throughout the day will fluctuate depending on the time of day and angle of panel with the sun. Three types of panels are available in the market, Mono-crystalline, Poly-crystalline and thin film type in decreasing order of efficiency. Higher efficiency modules require lesser space for installation. Various Indian and foreign panels manufactures are present in the market providing panels with different peak wattages. The best available panels have efficiency around 17 – 22%.

The DC electricity produced by the solar panels is converted to AC by solar inverters. Solar inverters are different from common inverters as they have Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technology to increase the efficiency of the solar panels. This inverter automatically synchronizes its AC output to the exact AC voltage and frequency of the grid. The efficiency of good quality inverters is greater than 96%.

For a Rooftop SPV plant , a flat or south facing roof is required. The type of your roof and its load bearing capacity can affect the size of solar system which can be installed and the type of mounting structures needed.
Concrete roof and Metal roof can accommodate panels directly or with some special structures but in case of asbestos roof, it is very critical to check the load bearing capacity and mounting feasibility.

But now with Micro-inverters , Roof with Shaded area can also be utilized to mount a Solar Array & thus reap benefits .
Micro-inverters are a bit expensive than the normal string inverters, as for each panel a separate micro inverter needs to be installed .

The usual benchmark for energy generated from a 1 kW Solar system is considered as 1,500 units per year. This is a conservative benchmark and actual generation is different for different locations. The amount of actual energy generated from a Solar Power system in a year depends on both internal and external factors. External factors which are beyond the control of a solar installer include the following:

  • Number of sunny days
  • Solar Irradiation
  • Day Temperatures
  • Air Mass

The output also depends on the following internal factors all of which are within the control of a solar installer:

  • Quality of engineering and design
  • Quality of equipment used
  • Quality of installation
  • Maintenance activities

The thumb rule implies 10 sqm of area (about 107 sqfeet) is required to install 1 kW solar panels. However, in existing buildings often the roof area is already utilized with solar water heaters, recreational areas, water tanks and lift rooms. This makes solar rooftops often difficult to install in retro-fit buildings but installation of solar shed on the roof allows the usage of the roof for solar panels or other purposes.

Acc. to our market research , generation of a unit for a DG set cost aboout INR 15/unit , due to Constant Input of  Fuel cost , maintenance & system life due to moving parts.
here the cost for Solar Power Generation is INR 5-6/unit.

Those opting for Green Building Certifications , should opt for a Hybrid Solar Power plant with Backup in form of Batteries & a DG set .

Sunlight is important for solar power , but even on cloudy days the Solar Panels are able to produce enough power to meet your requirements .
Just be sure to keep your solar panels in a shadow free area , and they will receive enought sunlight to work .

Solar Panels also work on ambient lighting , but best perform with sunlight , as it packs more energy per square meter .

In bad weather, your panel production won’t be 100%, but your panels will still be producing power. On a cloudy day, your panels might produce 60% to 70%  of what they normally would.
Only exception is if it snows enough for there to be a significant accumulation on your panels, your panels will not produce electricity.

Also Solar Panels from Tier 1 manufacturers are tested for Snow loads & Hail Storms , So your panels will not crack the glass even on heavy hail storms or snow storms .
Panels get cleaned best by rainwater , as rainwater is distilled water .

For a home or office with a connection of 15KW – it is not viable to install 15KW solar system because no one utilizes 100% power all day. Only the main requirements which run continuously can be shifted to solar like the TV, Computer, AC, Refrigerator, Accessories etc. Therefore, customers with a power supply of 15KW from the Grid, should ideally go for a 5 to 10 KW solar panel installation. This rule also applies for industries who are looking for Solar Energy system for Power solutions.

Acc. to MNRE & Government of India , 70% of the sanctioned Load connection can be applied for Solar Grid Tie Power Plant , Meaning if you have a 10 KW connection from the Utility power Supply aka DISCOM , You are eligible for Connecting a 7 KWp Rooftop Solar Power Plant to the Net metering Connection with your DISCOM .

This being said ,

It doesn’t mean you cannot Install more of Rooftop Solar Power ,
if you have the area availability , you are eligible to install as much Solar Power Plant capacity as you want , Conditions being , you will have to consume the Power generated on site , as captive load , and are only allowed to Feed in a Particular number of units per year into the Utility supply by DISCOM  , also the DISCOM will Reduce your Feed-in-tariff for the Same .
But ,
Hey , if you have a large empty roof, install the maximum capacity of Solar Power Plant, & share some Solar power with your neighbours , They will surely pay you for your Solar Power , because Solar Power is Cheap , Clean , Green & Renewable .
We have seen this taking place, & neighbours installing Rooftop Solar Power plants , resulting in a Neighborhood Solar Grid .

Your neighbours will think you did it to save the environment but you know you did it to save Money !

On Grid Solar

Pros

  • Simple design, and low maintenance
  • It can be easily integrated for net-metering.
  • All appliances can work on it, since wiring does not need to change.

Cons

  • Only works when grid power (reference line) available. In case of power cuts, solar electricity cannot be used, since it depends on a reference voltage from grid power.

Best used for

  • An on-grid system is ideal when you would like to lower your electricity bills, and do not need power backup.

 

Off-Grid or Hybrid Solar

Pros

  • In areas with unreliable power, people often have batteries and an inverter system for more steady electricity. Solar power can be added to charge batteries faster when grid-power is present, and to power appliances when it is not.

Cons

  • Wiring for the solar system is separate, so typically only a few appliances are hooked up to use that electricity.
  • Batteries require maintenance and need to be changed every three or four years. Maintenance-free batteries are typically more expensive and so, less popular.

Best used for

  • An off-grid system is best suited if you have unreliable electricity and are looking to decrease disruption to your life due to that.

No. On an average, solar panels add only 1-2 kg of weight per square foot of roof area. All roofs are typically able to withstand significantly more weight than this.

Also, when the Site Visit is done by an Oorjan representative, they will inspect the roof for robustness. In the unusual event of the roof not being able to support the weight of the solar system, they would be able to suggest reinforcement mechanisms that would make a rooftop system possible.

Rooftop systems are very durable, and have an average lifetime of 25 years. During this period, if roof work ever has to be done, the rooftop system can be easily dismantled and reassembled. So, future roof work is always possible.

India Increases 2022 Renewable Energy Target to 227 Gigawatts !

India set what seemed like a lofty target of 175 gigawatts of wind and solar energy by March 2022. Few believed that was a practical target, but then India plowed forward and happily impressed the world. This week that Renewable energy target was increased to 227 gigawatts!

Currently, India has added a little more than 70 gigawatts of that goal. Assessing the progress to date on a linear scale, the trend would seem to indicate the country is behind. However, renewable energy growth is not linear.

For a few years, renewable energy prices in India were rather high due to high finance costs. Now that those finance costs have come down substantially, renewable energy investment is accelerating. In a recent statement to the media, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) wrote, “New opportunities have emerged — altogether a new business space has been created. Indian companies have begun to explore foreign stock exchanges as a source of funds. India is progressively becoming a most favored destination for investment in renewables.”

Of course, global prices for renewable energy have continued to drop as well, allowing this goal to be increased. R K Singh, Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, recently stated at a press conference, “India’s current renewable-based power capacity stands at 70 Gw, and we will cross the 175-Gw target well before 2022. We have new schemes like offshore wind, floating solar, which will help us over-achieve the current target.”

Should India reach this new goal, it will be only behind China and the US in terms of installed renewable energy capacity. This increased goal is perfect timing as it is expected that renewable energy growth in China may contract this year due to lower subsidies.

Energy demand in India continues to grow and renewable energy is allowing that demand to be met at the best price possible. Unfortunately, India continues to add thermal (fossil fuel) power each year, but the good news is its utilization is decreasing. With the old renewable energy target, thermal power plant utilization was expected to be 57%; with the new target, it stands to reason that will drop even further.

The Indian government is going all out to ensure renewable energy is integrated into the national grid and curtailments are minimized. According to the ministry, “We have waived the Inter State Transmission System charges and losses for inter-state sale of solar and wind power for projects to be commissioned by March 2022. This will encourage setting up of the projects in states that have greater resource potential and availability of suitable land.”

Every country can expect to benefit from this drastic investment in renewable energy target by India. Their additions will continue to drive down the cost of renewables. Consequently, we can expect to see more fossil fuel power plants across the world stranded. While it is sad to see that the current US government is taking a step backwards in regards to renewable energy, actions by countries like India can help pick up the slack. When the US political climate changes, renewable energy prices will be substantially lower and we can get on with the transition at a feverous pace.
